The story & meaning
This is a genuine, hand-painted thangka of White Tara, the female Bodhisattva of compassion, healing, and long life, created using traditional Tibetan/Nepali thangka painting techniques passed down through generations of master artists.White Tara is seated gracefully in a lotus posture atop a fully bloomed lotus throne rising from tranquil waters. Her right hand rests in the boon-granting mudra (varada mudra), symbolizing generosity and blessing, while her left hand holds the stem of a blossoming utpala (lotus) flower, representing purity and spiritual awakening. She is known especially for bestowing long life, good health, and protection from harm, making this thangka a popular choice for healing and longevity practices.
Artistic Details:
- Elaborate five-jewel crown and traditional gold jewelry, hand-outlined with fine detail
- Flowing silk scarves and richly patterned garments in blue, teal, and gold
- Radiant golden aureole (halo) framed by a rainbow-striped nimbus
- Surrounding peony blossoms in pink, orange, and turquoise, symbolizing beauty and enlightenment
- Auspicious golden clouds and a warm sunset-toned sky background
- The Eight Auspicious Symbols (Ashtamangala) displayed at the base among rocks and flowing water
- Rich, vivid color palette using fine mineral and natural pigment-style paints
Craftsmanship:
Every line, shade, and symbol is hand-painted by skilled thangka artisans, following sacred iconographic proportions used in Himalayan Buddhist art for centuries. No two thangkas are exactly alike, making each piece a unique, one-of-a-kind spiritual artwork.
Great For:

Shipping & payment
Your thangka is shipped unframed, rolled in acid-free paper inside a rigid tube, with tracking. It usually leaves Kathmandu within 3–5 working days after payment clears; delivery takes 5–10 working days to most countries.
Payment is by direct bank transfer. After you place the order you will see our bank details. Use your order number as the reference and send us the receipt. Your piece is reserved for you in the meantime.
Care & hanging
Unroll gently at room temperature and let it rest flat under light weights for a day. Hang away from direct sunlight, heat and damp. Traditionally a thangka is mounted in silk brocade (we can do this for you before shipping), or it can be stretched and framed behind glass.
Never fold the painting, and avoid touching the painted surface or gold with bare fingers.
The hands behind it
Preserved by tradition. Powered by women.
We work hand in hand with women from under-represented and economically marginalised communities in Lalitpur. Through Akum they learn, grow and create, becoming artists, earners and storytellers. When you bring home a piece, you are not just buying art; you are supporting livelihoods and keeping an ancient tradition alive.
